Avoid using frames-
The use of frames are an efficient and attractive way of
displaying a multi-content web page. However, search engine
spiders will avoid indexing or will give low ranking to pages that
contain frames. Sites that displays frames that are generated with
more the one web address or domain will be dropped and banned from
the search listing.Avoid
complex themes and templates-
Web editors such as Front Page and Dream Weaver offers design page
templates and themes to create your web site.
This will often add unnecessary HTML scripting codes that will
make the page larger than is needed and make it harder to crawl.
It will sometimes add codes that cannot be read by search engines,
causing the spider not to index the page or even the whole
website. You should use those web page creator themes wisely.
Page content
and internal links-
Your home page needs to contain a full text description of
your business that contains keywords and products or services you
offer.
Using images and or Java script to create links to pages within
your site is fine as long as you create text links as well. Search
engines have a harder time navigating image or Java links.
(At the bottom of this page you can see navigation text links).
Use of Meta
Tags-
In the <head> section of your web's source HTML code you need to
include a "title" tag, a "description" tag and a "keywords" tag.
You may use the text box below to add your text and "copy and
paste" the code to the <head> of your HTML page.
The "Title" tag
should contain no more then 8 words.
The "Description" tag no more then 25 words that are found in your
text description on that page.
The "Keywords" tag should be the keywords associated with that
page.
Incoming and
outgoing links-
The number of quality inbound links to your web site as well as
outbound links determines your search engine ranking. You have to
be careful with links that comes from bad sites or sites that are
not relevant to the content of your site. They can sometimes do
more harm then good.
Avoid companies that are willing to sell you "tons" of links or
for a price, or include you on "link Farms"
The use of Headline Tags-
Just as someone reading a newspaper looks at headlines to find out
what is important, a search engine robot looks at the headlines of
a web page in order to pick up the essential feature of that page.
Put your main phrase in a headline and place it near the top of
the page. Your headline text should be enclosed with special
header tags such as <h1>, <h2>, <h3>. The headline tags for this
page are written as follows:
<h1>Hastings Downtown Business Association<br>Web Design Tips</h1>
<h2>Design tips for your business web site</h2>
The web design editor, such as Front Page, will add the header
tags for you. Just select the Text you want to headline and assign
a heading number in the format tool bar. You may, at this time
choose the font and size to best match the style of your page.
Submit you
site to search engines-
Lot's of companies on the internet will submit your site to
"hundreds" of search engines and directories
and guarantee top rankings in just a few days! Of course for a
price. Don't bother!
The major search engines and directories will be happy to consider
adding your site at no charge.
